What Michael Hyatt’s New Book Platform Taught Me: Part III

Hello All,

Today we’re focusing on Part III of Michael Hyatt’s “social media networking and marketing bible” (or at least that’s what I call it!): Platform.  I’d you’d like to get caught up to speed, you can also read Part I and Part II.  No matter what your Platform is, Michael Hyatt’s wisdom will help YOU create and maintain it.

In this post, we’ll be focusing on the gems of wisdom that stood out to me most in Part III: “Build Your Home Base.”  We already made sure to “Start with Wow” in Part I and prepared to launch in Part II.  I found this section of the book to be particularly packed with information I needed to know or relearn starting with the types of marketing I engage in.

Focus Your Efforts Online

For someone who doesn’t have the funds they would like to have, this chapter is important.  I’ll even go as far to say that if you have the funds you’d like, it still won’t make the best impact and give you your money’s worth if you’re not spending on the right things and putting it in the right place(s).

Internet marketing is the next best thing to word-of-mouth marketing as it concerns reach and cost.  It costs you nothing to tweet.  It also costs you nothing (or a little bit) to maintain a professional page on Facebook.  Pinterest, personal blogs, etc. the list goes on.  These are all free outlets to use as “borrowed platforms” for your brand and products.

You can also start implementing cost-efficient advertising with the likes of Google Adwords, Facebook, and other similar options.

Create the Content Yourself

Unless I ask someone to guest on my blog, I will never have someone pushing out content for me as a rule.  The only exception to this would be if I hired an intern or other team member for one of my growing enterprises—yet they would still represent themselves on behalf of the my company—not as a ghost-blogger, tweeter, etc.

Michael Hyatt’s very keen on this point: if you’re not going to maintain your blog (or Twitter account) yourself, then don’t bother at all.  People will interpret a ghost-blogger, etc. inauthentic and it will ultimately hurt your brand.

Create a Better About Page

This is something I have to work on myself.  My About Pages read just like a bio that you would have in the back of your book, submitted alongside and press release, almost like a resume in prose.  Ouch.

Michael elaborates on the fact that an About Page should be written in first person (yes, this is against EVERYTHING your English teachers and professors taught you!).  It should also be written in a conversational tone which is much harder to do in second or third person.

Your About Page should be about what the reader wants to know as well as what you want them to know about you and your blog.  It should also invite them to subscribe to your blog.  This is a no-brainer, yet so overlooked in many About Pages.

He also gives other wonderful ideas, but I’ll let you buy the book to check out those.

You may also view Michael’s About Page for reference here.

Build a Speaking Page

Now I literally just finished Marshawn Evans//ME University’s Ready 2 Speak tele-event (conference call) and it was all about the importance of pushing aside fear and all of its tactics, preparing yourself, and embracing the voice and message which God has entrusted YOU to deliver to the world.  She also has a brand new boot camp, Speak 4 Pay, which you may register for here.  (Trust me, it’s worth every penny!)

While in Miami, FL at my spiritual father’s conference, his good friend, Dr. Renny McLean spoke these words: have faith in your voice.

Now, if you’re reading my blog, tempted to purchase Platform, or have some other type of business, book, ministry, or invention, you must prepare yourself to speak that which God has given you to the world.

Proverbs 18:16 tells us that a man (or woman’s) gift makes room for them and brings them before great men.

This is the essence of Platform and preparing yourself to speak to these “great men” will not only expand your Platform, it will expand your wallet!  It will also place you in a position of authority that others will position themselves to learn and glean from.

Isn’t that the point of everything we’re doing?  Preacher or curator, author or inventor, it is our job to do our part to get the word out and God will do the rest through divine appointments, connections, and more.  Building a Speaking Page will encourage those who didn’t consider your speaking abilities to explore them and invite you.  Others will be happy to find if because they were expecting this “product” from you all along.  Do you really want to disappoint them?

As my new eBook Godly Government releases (more info to come soon!) on Election Day 2012, it is my opportunity to start building, not only a writing, but speaking Platform for myself.  Creating a Speaking Page on my blogs will help push me mentally, emotionally, and logically in that direction.

Please see Michael’s Speaking Page here.

Tune in next week for more wisdom from Platform and until then, PLEASE be sure to visit Michael Hyatt’s site and buy your very own copy of Platform!

The Gift of Elevation

This afternoon I was reading through my awesome NKJV Chronological Study Bible when this verse jumped out at me:

“Do you see a man who excels in his work?  He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men,” (Proverbs 22:29).

Now being that I’ve been walking in the Lord (pronounced “Lawd”) for the majority of my 26 years (since the age of 7), so I’ve read this verse several times, but it stood out to me particularly today.

It speaks of a man (or woman) who is greatly talented—maybe in one area, maybe in more—and because of that great gifting God has given him (or her) access to “stand before kings”.

Standing before Kings

When I look at the phrase standing before kings, I think of several things such as the people you “stand” before:

  • Royalty
  • Politicians & Judges
  • Corporate Moguls
  • Celebrities, Athletes & Entertainers, etc.

I also think about what the term “stand” implicates.

  • To Meet, Become Acquainted
  • To Network
  • To Speak & Preach
  • To Teach & Train
  • To Befriend
  • To Be Mentored

King Solomon had it down when he stated this verse.  He knew that the giftings God placed inside of us would be worthy of the great men and women He (God) would cause you to interact with on various levels.  He knew that the greatness of your gift would denote the greatness of the people in the you were literally made to stand before.  You WILL NOT [only] stand before unknown men.

We also know that when a thing is said once or twice, that it is established.  So I guess that it’s a good thing there’s another verse to back Proverbs 22:29 up.

“A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men,” (Proverbs 18:16).

Again, a person’s gift will literally create a time, place, and opportunity for you to stand before great men.

Real Life Examples

Marshawn Evans, ME University

Marketplace Mentor, Reinvention Strategist, Author

Site, Facebook Page, Twitter @marshawnevans

I’m on a particularly exciting high right now due the free televent (conference call) Marshawn just hosted.  It was extremely inspiring!  Due to Marshawn’s mentoring from a distance, I was able to (finally) create a realistic Mission Statement for my life that helps to guide my decision and actions, started this blog, and wrote a book (353 pages and counting) that I am currently editing and looking for a publishing house to pick up.  All this and I haven’t even got the opportunity to buy her book SKIRTS in the Boardroom or attend one of her live events yet!

Officially, Marshawn Evans is a marketplace mentor and reinvention strategist who mainly deals with women, yet she is also a consultant who deals frequently with athletes, corporate giants and their businesses, and other high level individuals.  Marshawn has also finished as the third runner up in the Miss America pageant under the title as Miss District of Columbia (she won in the Talent & Interview segments) and starred in Donald Trump’s The Apprentice reality show.  Needless to say, Marshawn’s ability to take her wisdom, intelligence, and go-get-it spirit into a product that can be merchandised and also used to mentor other individuals on various levels has created a special niche in the world just for her.  If you’re not familiar with her, get familiar.  Her gifts will help you to realise your own.

Dr. Myles Munroe, Myles Munroe International

Kingdom Specialist, Government Consultant, Business Mentor, Author

Site, Ministry Site, Facebook Profile & Page

Dr. Myles Munroe is also another favourite of mine.   Defying the odds of his grade school teachers who told him he would never do anything, this determined man graduated from Oral Roberts University with not one, not two, but three Bachelors degrees at one time!  And that was just his undergrad studies!  I have sat under Dr. Munroe’s teachings theological and corporate teachings more times than I can count and read (and gotten autographed) more of his books than I can recall.  His influence during my formative college years into the present has produced in me a [Gospel of the] Kingdom mindset that is still continuing to form as I learn more and increase in wisdom.

Dr. Myles has the privilege of travelling the world translating his Kingdom principles into governmental trainings, corporate teachings, theological sermons, and phenomenal ministry products that world-renown individuals would pay any amount of money to receive in person.  Dr. Myles has stood before “great men”; he has literally been bestowed honours by the Queen of England; he has and is continuing to fulfill his purpose in the earth through the giftings God has placed within him.

Note that although your gift is meant and made to bring you before great men, that it does not mean you will never have a reason, need, or desire to stand before common men.  For if there was no one to provide you with a good and godly role model how could Marshawn and Dr. Myles have attained the heights they have?  Our common man, everyone who has a desire for more wisdom, more knowledge, and purpose will always need those who have mastered Proverbs 22:29 and 18:16 to teach them how to master it as well.  This example we get from the greatest and most gifted man to walk the earth, the Son of God: Jesus Christ.  His compassion moved Him always to minister to people whomever they were, wherever they were.  We should strive, even in all of our giftings to be just like Him.  God has given us each gifts and measures of gifts, therefore, we must be good stewards of that which God has given us and help to benefit, first the Church, then the world at large.  Without that goal in mind, our gifts would be entirely useless.

P.S. Please vote for me in the Wedding Industry Experts 2012 Awards! Thanks!
